Research interests
Building on my expertise described above, since 2010 my research project has been using OMIC approaches to study the pathogenic processes associated with chronic dilated cardiomyopathies associated with Chagas disease (infection by Trypanosoma cruzi). These cardiomyopathies represent the main cause of morbidity and mortality in Latin America.
We hypothesized that the expression or regulation of certain relevant genes and proteins in myocardial tissue would underlie the pathogenic process. We therefore decided to set up an ambitious program to dissect the pathogenic process, but also to identify markers for diagnosis and prognosis.
Setting up an international consortium.
Recruit the largest possible cohort of patients and asymptomatic individuals. Set up cardiac tissue collection.
Elucidate the pathogenic process involved in Chagas disease.
Identify highly pathogenic common or rare variants associated with the disease.
Set up genome-wide studies.
Exome sequencing in multi-case families.
Identification of genetic variants associated with chagasic cardiomyopathies.
Study of the functional impact of these variants.
Identification of new drugs to restore optimal mitochondrial function.
