1. BIOINFORMATICS AND GENOMICS OF MOLECULAR NETWORKS

The research activities in Axis 1 are focused on two main areas:

  1. Genomes. Understand how the precise regulation of gene expression during normal development and cell differentiation is achieved by the combined action of different regulatory elements.
  2. Networks. Analyze interaction networks to grasp phenotype emergence, elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms and investigate the effect of perturbations on network topology and cellular functions.

Current research topics:

1.1  Bioinformatics of Regulatory Sequences (4)
1.2  Discovery and functional dissection of Regulatory Elements (5)
1.3  Bioinformatics of gene regulation underlying phenotypic traits (4)
1.4  Network bioinformatics of cellular functions and phenotypes (3)

2. GENETICS AND GENOMICS OF MULTIFACTORIAL DISEASES (11)

The research activities in Axis 2 aim at identifying genes and mechanisms underlying complex phenotypes, such as aging and multifactorial diseases, with a particular focus on infectious and inflammatory diseases (Malaria, Chagas disease, cardiomyopathies, sepsis) and hematological malignancies (lymphoma, leukemia) by performing high-throughput functional assays and multi-omics data integration. A more long term aim is to propose strategies for personalized treatment and development of novel therapeutic approaches.

2.2  Characterization of altered cellular functions in disease states (6)
2.3  Physiopathology of cardiac function in model organisms (4)
